Captive Breeding Seahorses ~ For the world’s Aquarium Trade

Why Farm Seahorses?
In 1998 we began farming Seahorses to supply the already existing Aquarium market so hobbyists could enjoy these majestic fish without putting pressure on our wild stocks.

Seahorses, are in demand for the Traditional Herbal Medicine Market, Aquarium Trade and for use as curios.

Sustainable use of our natural resources— called ” fish farming” (Aquaculture) enables the market needs to be supplied without increasing the demands on wild stock.

The business moved to Port Adelaide in January 2007.  The new facility has a major focus on Education and Viewing, while breeding does still occur, it is now done on a smaller scale.

Less than 10 years ago, Australia wild harvested fish to meet market demands. We now farm many species. As the world’s population increases, demands increase.

It has been necessary to supply the market with other than wild harvested fish to meet market demands, ensuring the continuation of our ocean resources well into the next millennium.

Australian Seahorses were placed under the Wildlife Protection Act in 1998 and their conservation status is considered vulnerable. Seahorse populations throughout the world are diminishing.

To ensure seahorses are around to be enjoyed by future generations, many strategies need to be implemented.

We believe that by farming seahorses and offering them for sale to the aquarium trade, along with an education program encouraging the world to purchase “Captive Bred Seahorses” to be a step in the right direction.

Captive bred Seahorses are a delight to keep, they not only offer the hobbyist a hardier and easier to keep aquarium pet, but they also readily accept frozen foods.

This web site was created to give the hobbyists an introduction to the care requirements of seahorses, to further enhance knowledge, ensuring the health and longevity of a beautiful species.

It is important to ensure that if you wish to keep a Seahorse you:
  • Make sure you investigate the needs of your seahorse species ensuring you provide him/her with the best environment possible. Your aquarium shop must supply optimum keeping parameters and care instructions. Which you need to follow.

  • Ensure the Aquarium shop owner purchases Captive Bred Seahorses.

  • The most important equation when keeping seahorses in your home aquaria is Good Food + Good Water = Happy, Healthy Seahorses

But most of all enjoy the pleasure of watching your seahorse antics.

Happy Seahorse Keeping.
