Hippocampus tuberculatus:-
commonly
called The Knobby Seahorse. Description: Can grow to 8 cms (adult), mature males have an extremely prominent brood pouch. Mature horses often have fronds or spines like a mane on head and neck. Stripes sometimes found on tail. Distinctive knob like coronet. Very similar to H. breviceps. Colouration: Brown to yellowish or sometimes a reddish hue with spots, often has dark spots on head. Optimum Keeping Parameters: Temp 22°C-24°C; pH 8.2; Salinity sg 1024, Ammonia—Nil; Nitrite—Nil; Nitrates— < 20 ppm. |

Other Notes:
Is sexually active from 6 months old; is not monogamous, but will
pair bond in tank; brood size between 10-50 (dependant on age and
size of parents); average brood size for adults is 35; usually
mates between Oct-Jan; can have up to 3 births per year; gestation
is approximately 21-24 days; fry born at 10-12 mm, you can offer
them Instar II Artemia from day one. Availability: The Knobby Seahorse is being “captive bred” for the aquarium trade. Makes good tank mates for H. whitei .
Stocking Densities:
As these are a small species it is recommended to stock adults at
1 pair per 15 litres. It is also recommended to keep them in a
small tank with no live rock. A 20-30 litre tank is best. |
